Non-specific physical symptoms in relation to actual and perceived proximity to mobile phone base stations and powerlines.

Abstract: 

BACKGROUND: Evidence about a possible causal relationship between non-specific physical symptoms (NSPS) and exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted by sources such as mobile phone base stations (BS) and powerlines is insufficient. So far little epidemiological research has been published on the contribution of psychological components to the occurrence of EMF-related NSPS. The prior objective of the current study is to explore the relative importance of actual and perceived proximity to base stations and psychological components as determinants of NSPS, adjusting for demographic, residency and area characteristics.METHODS: Analysis was performed on data obtained in a cross-sectional study on environment and health in 2006 in the Netherlands. In the current study, 3611 adult respondents (response rate: 37%) in twenty-two Dutch residential areas completed a questionnaire. Self-reported instruments included a symptom checklist and assessment of environmental and psychological characteristics. The computation of the distance between household addresses and location of base stations and powerlines was based on geo-coding. Multilevel regression models were used to test the hypotheses regarding the determinants related to the occurrence of NSPS.RESULTS: After adjustment for demographic and residential characteristics, analyses yielded a number of statistically significant associations: Increased report of NSPS was predominantly predicted by higher levels of self-reported environmental sensitivity; perceived proximity to base stations and powerlines, lower perceived control and increased avoidance (coping) behavior were also associated with NSPS. A trend towards a moderator effect of perceived environmental sensitivity on the relation between perceived proximity to BS and NSPS was verified (p = 0.055). There was no significant association between symptom occurrence and actual distance to BS or powerlines.CONCLUSIONS: Perceived proximity to BS, psychological components and socio-demographic characteristics are associated with the report of symptomatology. Actual distance to the EMF source did not show up as determinant of NSPS.

Descriptive epidemiology of CNS tumors in France: results from the Gironde Registry for the period 2000-2007.

Abstract: 

An increase in the incidence of CNS tumors has been observed in many countries in the last decades. The reality of this trend has been much debated, as it has happened during a period when computer-assisted tomography and MRI have dramatically improved the detection of these tumors. The Gironde CNS Tumor Registry provides here the first data on CNS tumor incidence and trends in France for all histological types, including benign and malignant tumors, for the period 2000-2007. Incidence rates were calculated globally and for each histological subtype. For trends, a piecewise log-linear model was used. The overall annual incidence rate was found to be 17.6/100 000. Of this rate, 7.9/100 000 were neuroepithelial tumors and 6.0/100 000 were meningiomas. An overall increase in CNS tumor incidence was observed from 2000 to 2007, with an annual percent change (APC) of +2.33%, which was explained mainly by an increase in the incidence of meningiomas over the 8-year period (APC = +5.4%), and also more recently by an increase in neuroepithelial tumors (APC = +7.45% from 2003). The overall increase was more pronounced in women and in the elderly, with an APC peaking at +24.65% in subjects 85 and over. The increase in the incidence rates we observed may have several explanations: not only improvements in registration, diagnosis, and clinical practice, but also changes in potential risk factors.

Abstract: 

Brain edema is a fatal complication of acute ischemic stroke and associated with worse outcomes in patients. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of magnesium sulfate on vasogenic brain edema formation and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption caused by ischemia-reperfusion (IR) in a rat model of ischemic stroke. A total of 72 male Sprague-Dawley rats were categorized into the following three primary groups: sham, control ischemic, magnesium-sulfate-treated (300 mg/kg loading dose, followed by an additional 100 mg/kg) ischemic (n = 24 in each group). Transient focal cerebral ischemia was induced by 60-min-long occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery, followed by 24-h-long reperfusion. Sensorimotor deficits, infarct volume, and brain edema were evaluated at the end of the reperfusion period. The BBB permeability was assessed by Evans Blue extravasation technique. Lipid peroxidation levels were assessed by measuring the malondialdehyde content in the brain tissue homogenate, and the activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase,catalase, and glutathione peroxidase were detected according to the technical manual of the assay kits. Induction of cerebral ischemia in the control group produced considerable BBB damage in conjunction with severe brain edema formation. Treatment with magnesium sulfate significantly attenuated brain edema and protected BBB integrity in the ischemic lesioned hemisphere. In addition, magnesium sulfate reduced lipid peroxidation and increased antioxidant protection of brain tissue by upregulating the activities of antioxidant enzymes. Treatment with magnesium sulfate protected BBB integrity against IR-induced damage and reduced vasogenic edema formation partly via antioxidant mechanisms in a rat model of acute ischemic stroke.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of an herbal supplement containing 300 mg magnesium sulfate on lipid profile, as well as insulin resistance and secretion in overweight patients.Seventy overweight non-diabetic volunteers with Body Mass Index (BMI)>28 kg/m2 were included in a randomized double blind placebo-controlled clinical trial (ethic number HUMS REC.1394.57) and registered in Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT2012110124756N2 with registration number 24756). They received either placebo or an herbal supplement capsule containing 300 mg magnesium sulfate (MgSO) for 6 months on a daily basis. Metabolic control, lipid profile and magnesium status were determined at baseline and every three months. A Technical Approach to the Evaluation of Radiofrequency Radiation Emissions from Mobile Telephony Base Stations.

Abstract: 

During the last two decades, the number of macrocell mobile telephony base station antennas emitting radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic radiation (EMR) in residential areas has increased significantly, and therefore much more attention is being paid to RF EMR and its effects on human health. Scientific field measurements of public exposure to RF EMR (specifically to radio frequency radiation) from macrocell mobile telephony base station antennas and RF electromagnetic field (EMF) intensity parameters in the environment are discussed in this article. The research methodology is applied according to the requirements of safety norms and Lithuanian Standards in English (LST EN). The article presents and analyses RF EMFs generated by mobile telephony base station antennas in areas accessible to the general public. Measurements of the RF electric field strength and RF EMF power density were conducted in the near- and far-fields of the mobile telephony base station antenna. Broadband and frequency-selective measurements were performed outside (on the roof and on the ground) and in a residential area. The tests performed on the roof in front of the mobile telephony base station antennas in the near-field revealed the presence of a dynamic energy interaction within the antenna electric field, which changes rapidly with distance. The RF EMF power density values on the ground at distances of 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 m from the base station are very low and are scattered within intervals of 0.002 to 0.05μW/cm². The results were compared with international exposure guidelines (ICNIRP).

Effect of electromagnetic field induced by radio frequency waves at 900 to 1800 MHz on bone mineral density of iliac bone wings.

Abstract: 

OBJECTIVE: Telecommunication has gained a different meaning in daily life with the introduction of the mobile phone system. However, electromagnetic pollution has increased in parallel to this improvement. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of electromagnetic waves emitted from cellular phones operating at a frequency of 900 to 1800 MHz on the bone mineral density of the human iliac bone wings, which are the most common carriage sites for mobile phones.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 150 male volunteer participants were included in this study. The mean age was 31.85 years, and the age range was between 21 and 57 years. The participants were separated into 2 groups based on as follows: iliac side exposed to electromagnetic wave (group 1) and unexposed side (group 2). Of the total number of participants, 122 were carrying their phones on their right iliac wings, whereas 28 were carrying their phones on their left iliac wings. The mean daily carriage duration was 14.7 hours (between 12 and 20 h), and the mean duration for cellular phone use was 6.2 years (between 4 and 9 yr). Mineral bone density was measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry in the right and the left iliac wings of all the participants. The SPSS 15 software (SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL) was used for statistical analysis. In the comparison of the 2 sides, Student t test was performed and P0.05). In addition, the mean values of group 1 were not as low as those measured in osteopeny or osteoporosis cases.CONCLUSIONS: Current data may suggest that taking into consideration cellular phone use when iliac bone graft is necessary in clinical practice would constitute an important factor for more favorable outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: The widespread use of mobile phones has been increased over the past decade; they are now an essential part of business, commerce and society. The use of mobile phones can cause health problems. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to investigate the association of using mobile phones with fatigue, headache, dizziness, tension and sleep disturbance in the Saudi population and provide health and social awareness in using these devices.METHODS: This study was conducted in the Department of Physiology, College of Medicine, King Saud University, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the year 2002 to 2003. In the present study, a total of 437 subjects (55.1% male and 39.9% female) were invited, they have and had been using mobile phones. A questionnaire was distributed regarding detailed history and association of mobile phones with health hazards.RESULTS: The results of the present study showed an association between the use of mobile phones and health hazards. The overall mean percentage for these clinical findings in all groups were headache (21.6%), sleep disturbance (4.%), tension (3.9%), fatigue (3%) and dizziness (2.4%).CONCLUSION: Based on the results of the present study, we conclude that the use of mobile phones is a risk factor for health hazards and suggest that long term or excessive use of mobile phones should be avoided by health promotion activities such as group discussions, public presentations and through electronic and print media sources.

The anatomical distribution of cerebral gliomas in mobile phone users.

Abstract: 

We analysed the association between mobile phone use and the anatomical distribution of glial brain tumours in Irish neurosurgical patients. All patients with unilateral histologically proven glioma were enrolled over a 12 month period. We hypothesised that were a cellular phone to cause a glioma then it would do so on the dominant hand side. Fifty mobile phone users and twenty three non-users were identified. The vast majority of patients (69/73) were right handed and the right side of the brain was more common as the tumour site (48/73). Fisher's exact test revealed no statistical significance for glioma location based on the handedness of the patient in the mobile phone user group and location of the tumour in both user and non-user groups. We discuss our findings and the stable trend in the incidence of reported glioma cases.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a temporary form of diabetes during pregnancy, which causes maternal diabetic symptoms and abnormal fetal development, and influence the health of maternal-child in clinical practice. Mangiferin is a bioactive ingredient with anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation and anti-endoplasmic reticulum stress activities. In current study, the effects of mangiferin on GDM were evaluated. We reported that mangiferin greatly improved altered glucose and lipid profile, insulin tolerance, and reproductive outcomes of the GDM mice. Mangiferin ameliorated placental oxidative stress, inflammation and ER stress in GDM mice. Therefore, we demonstrated that mangiferin displayed protective effects on gestational diabetes mellitus symptoms by suppressing placental oxidative stress, inflammation and endoplasmic reticulum stress in GDM mice.
